New Orleans / Baton Rouge - Hurricane Claim Checklist:

Richard Voorhies, Attorney at Law, has provided the below information so that insured can understand the proper steps to take in order increase their chances that they are fairly and accurately compensated by their insurance carriers for all property losses sustained as a result of hurricane damage.  The following information is simply a checklist of things homeowners can do to reduce the chance that their insurance company will take advantage of them.  These prophylactic measures should be used by homeowners following all hurricane storm damage, not just that which was caused by Hurricane Gustav and/or Hurricane Ike.

1 - Get your homeowners insurance policy and review it in detail; in particular read your declaration sheet and understand both the types of coverage and the coverage limits which are associated with your respective insurance policy.

2 - Document all hurricane damage sustained to the property; take pictures, notes and other means by which you can reproduce information to the insurance carrier to show the extent of property damage sustained.

3 - Keep a timeline of pertinent events; write down the dates on which you first contacted your insurer to file a hurricane claim; an appraiser surveyed your property; payment for your loss was first tendered; and all other potentially relevant dates concerning your hurricane claim.

4 - Save all receipts and invoices related to any repair work or replacement costs expended as a result of your hurricane property damage; dont forget that you may, depending on your particular homeowner's policy, be entitled to compensation for the additional living expenses that you may have incurred as a result of hurricane damage; so save all receipts relating to those expenses where that coverage applies.

5 - Contact an attorney/lawyer immediately if you feel like your not being treated fairly by your insurance carrier; you have the right to have your hurricane insurance claim both timely and properly adjusted; dont accept anything less.
